Kurt Stallmann

Kurt Stallmann devotes his energy towards synthesizing many of the mediums available to composers today.  His compositions are written for acoustic instruments, electroacoustic combinations with interactive elements, environmental sounds, and purely synthetic sounds.  He also enjoys improvising with musicians and frequently collaborates with artists from other disciplines. 

Recent commissions include Moon Crossings (Fromm Music Foundation), a 17 minute work for 15 performers, video, and surround sound system; Following Franz, Now (Chamber Music America) a String Quartet with optional electronics for the Grammy nominated Enso String Quartet; Breaking Earth (Meet The 
Composer Commissioning Music/USA Program and DiverseWorks ArtSpace), a twenty-two minute multi-disciplinary installation with filmmaker Alfred Guzzetti for five independent streams of high-definition video with eleven channels of audio; and SONA: Wind, Rain, and Trains (Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County), a multi-disciplinary work inspired by the soundscape of Houston 
for string quartet with real-time digital processing, videos, found sounds, and synthesized sounds.

After completing his Ph.D. in music composition at Harvard University in 1999, he joined the Harvard faculty where he served as Assistant Professor of Music and as Associate Director of the Harvard University Studios for Electro-Acoustic Composition (HUSEAC). Stallmann is currently Associate Professor in music  
composition at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music and Director of the Rice Electroacoustic Music Labs (REMLABS). Stallmann’s work was recently recognized by the American Academy of Arts and Letters with a 2009 Goddard Lieberson Fellowship.

Apprentice of Master Jian-Lou (Teacher Yu-Mei Kao); She graduated from National Taiwan University of Arts Department of Music, Chinese Culture University Department of Chinese Music, and Graduate Institute of Art (Music) with specialization in performance, advising professor Cheng-Ping Wang. She admitted to the Taipei Chinese Orchestra in 2004 and received many accolades during her studies of the pipa. She has rich performing experiences and specializes in adapting different styles of music.

Conductor: Fusao Kajima


A native of Japan, Fusao Kajima began his piano studies at age four and his conducting studies at fourteen. An alumnus of the New England Conservatory and the University of Michigan, his teachers include Gustav Meier, Martin Katz, Veronica Jochum, and Louis Krasner. Kajima has studied at Tanglewood with Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and Leonard Slatkin, at Chigiana with Gennady Rodhestvensky, and also in Estonia with Neeme Jarvi and Jorma Panula.
Maestro Kajima became the conductor of NTSO since August 2010.
